Some Sad News

David Digger Barrett now lives on in the pages of his book. Sadly Digger passed away at the ripe old age of 90 years on Sunday 22 July 2012 at Greenslopes Hospital in Brisbane. We were both looking forward very much to launching our book which was a joint effort of both of us. The launches will still go ahead as planned but unfortunately I will be the only one signing the books.

Brian Robertson, co-author of Digger’s Story

I am so very sad to hear of the passing of Digger, just weeks before we were to meet in Melbourne and attend his book launch together. We became great email friends for just a short period of time, but during that time I came to know Digger as a decent, honourable, man with a great sense of humour. Fond thoughts of a member of the 2/9th Field Ambulance Family & Friends Assoc. Melbourne. RIP Digger. Carolan Dodd (daughter of D Dodd (dec) 2/9th Field Ambulance)

I am so sad to just learn of the death of David having just closed the last page in his book 10minutes ago. I loved his story so much I thought I would research him on the internet only now to read the tragic news. To me at 56yrs of age, David and men and women like him are my hero's. In Australia's darkest hour they gave us the life we and our children live today and in turn we owe it to them to keep their memory alive. I wished I had met DIGGER however I have met many like him over the years and as I say to many they are the greatest generation Australia has every produced. RIP Digger you have earnt it mate.
To Brian Robertson, a great book written with passion and sincerity thank you mate from one son of a greatfull nation.

Sorry to here the passing of Digger.
For a short while the numbers of the 2/9th Field Ambulance increased after Carol Dodd had made contact him. I am very thankful that his story was put to print so that my children and grandchildren can learn of what the men and women endured during that period. RIP Digger.

I have just started reading Diggers story, and was suprised to know that he was in 2/9th Field Ambulance. My late F-I-L whom i never met was also a member of this unit (Jack Pearce) but his daughter Michele speaks of him often, through this story i may get to know him a little better also.

I have just finished reading this wonderful book and looked on the computer to find an address to write to Mr Barrett with my compliments! Such very sad news! Therefore, Mr Robertson, please accept my congratulations on behalf of yourself and the late Mr Barrett. I found it very difficult to put down the book before I had finished reading it. At 69, I only wished I had made the effort to access more information of the 'Pacific War' much earlier in my life. Unfortunately there was not the profusion of similar books as is available to-day. My wife is a teacher of Japanese, has studied at Tokyo University and we both have visited Japan on a number of occasions. The last chapter of your book is very poignant to me as I have stayed in private homes in Japan and Japanese have been welcome in my home. Again, thank you for writing this book. BH.
